Do You Lie Wildly About Your Traffic?

I was pleased to see that a friend of mine got a freelance article published in a business publication recently. Good quality piece about the techniques for igniting a web content business.

The company being profiled displayed a certain degree of cockiness about its prospects, but at the same time noted that its growth had "leveled off" and that they needed partnerships or investment to move forward. Fair enough.

The problem was that they weren't nearly clear enough on their unique contribution to the space... and that they were wildly inflating their traffic claims. I know, because it's not hard to check up on these things these days. The various tools available will give you the answer within an order of magnitude.

Other popular sites mentioned in the story - such as a well known sports blog - passed the sniff test. Their traffic turned out to be every bit as strong as portrayed.

Not so for the featured company. Who do they think they're kidding? At this point in dot com history, bragging about traffic you don't have isn't going to cut it for long.
